‘Evils of democracy’

A series of original source documents about the Mobtown Massacre and other “Evils of Democracy” was published in 1816. The compendium included two key sources of information already covered on our blog –– the Maryland House of Delegate’s Report of Grievances (though only the executive report, not all the original depositions) and the Federalists’ “Exact and Authentic Narrative”. The publication also included a number of other documents including letters from Hanson and his partner Wagner, reactions to the attacks from newspapers and “resolves” approved by citizen groups around the country mostly condemning the violence. It’s a good source of background about the events and especially as it pertains to the aftermath and reaction from around the nation. The link is below or visit it here.
